Subsidized punishment

We are sent to debtor’s prison,
For unpayable fines,
We are forced into attrition,
For imaginary crimes.

The mother owes fifty dollars,
On a twenty dollar crime,
But her hungry child calls her,
And now she has to do time;
She gets hauled away,
For feeding her kid,
She should have paid
And told her child
“Have a stiff upper lip.”
